What is a Bitcoin whale and how do you track one?
Updated: 2026-10-07 · MarketRadar Whale
A Bitcoin whale is an address or person holding so much bitcoin that moving it can shake the market. Because the Bitcoin network is public, anyone can watch these addresses.
How many bitcoin make a whale?
There is no official number. In market talk, addresses holding 1,000 BTC or more are usually called whales, though analysts use other thresholds. What matters is the effect on the market.
Not every big address is a real whale
Many of the biggest addresses belong to exchanges and hold thousands of customers' coins. When one moves it may just be wallet housekeeping, not a whale selling. Telling an exchange from an individual is the first tracking skill.
How to watch whale movements
- Open the address in a Bitcoin block explorer and follow its transactions (manual and slow).
- Use a whale tracker that alerts you.
- For futures, see Hyperliquid whales in our ranking, where positions are public too.
What do whales signal?
A large move to an exchange can hint at selling, and a withdrawal to private storage can hint at long-term holding. These are probabilities, not certainties.
